Our Fort Calhoun Church family invites you to prayerfully consider what membership means to God and to us.  God has given us a unique opportunity to pursue Christ and His Kingdom among one another, our families, the greater Washington County area, and the world, in cooperation with Presbyterians and all other Christians.

We believe that Jesus Christ is Head of the Church and our covenant of membership guides us to faithfulness in our worship, mission, and life together.  It also helps us remain faithful to Biblical, Reformed and Confessional Christian faith in following Jesus Christ as serious disciples.

We invite you to become an active member after prayerful study, communication with our pastor, and getting to know other Active Members of the Fort Calhoun family.  Below you will see what helps us remain faithful to our active membership, and we give them to you for your consideration.

Our Covenant of Membership

The Meaning of Membership

How to Become a Member

Our Covenant of Membership

We believe that membership comes through faith!

The incarnation of God in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ gives to this church not only it’s mission, but also it’s understanding of membership.  One becomes an active member of the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church through faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and acceptance of His Lordship in our lives.  Baptism and public profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord are visible signs of entrance into the active membership of the church.

We believe that membership is inclusive!

Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church welcomes all persons who respond in trust and obedience to God's grace in Jesus Christ and desire to become part of the membership and ministry of His church. No persons shall be denied membership because of race, ethnic origin, worldly condition, or any other reason not related to profession of faith.

We believe membership means ministry!

A faithful member accepts Christ's call to be involved responsibly in the ministry of the church.  Such involvement includes:

bulletProclaiming the good news of our God in our lives.
bulletTaking part in the common life and worship of Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church
bulletPraying and studying Scripture and the faith of the Christian Church.
bulletSupporting the work of the church through the giving of money, time and talents.
bulletParticipating in the committees and ministries of the church.
bulletDemonstrating a new quality of life within and through service to others.
bulletLiving responsibly in our personal, family, vocational, political, cultural and social relationships.
bulletWorking in the world for peace, justice, freedom and human fulfillment.

We believe Fort Calhoun's commitment to you is:

The Session of Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church endeavors to support you in your Christian faith, as we all seek to accomplish the great ends of the Church.  The Church covenants with you in the following ways:

bulletTo lead you in participation in the mission of the whole church.
bulletTo provide you worship of God, including the preaching of God's Word, the sharing of the Sacraments, and the music program.
bulletTo provide for your growth and training for ministry through personal and pastoral care, education programs including Sunday School, sharing in fellowship and mutual support, and opportunities for sharing your faith through service in the world.
bulletTo lead you in ministries of personal and social healing and reconciliation in our community.
bulletTo challenge you with the privilege of responsible Christian stewardship of money, time and talents.
bulletTo lead you to continually discover what God is doing in the world, and to plan for change, renewal, and reformation under the Word of God.

The Meaning of Membership

 Profession of Faith

There are two ways to make a profession of faith.

  1. When persons baptized as infants reach an age when they are ready to make public profession of faith and accept their responsibility in the life of the church.  The person is invited and encouraged to be prepared to make a public profession of their faith in Jesus Christ.
  2. When persons who have not been baptized desire to profess their faith in Christ and be incorporated in the life of the Church as believers, they so by making public their profession of faith and receiving Baptism after appropriate instruction and reflection.

Certificate of Transfer

Persons who have made a profession faith and have been received into membership in a particular church may be received by the session upon receipt of a certificate of transfer from the church in which they have most recently been a member.

Reaffirmation of Faith

It is sometimes the case that persons who previously made a profession of faith and became active members in a particular church are unable to secure a certificate of transfer or other evidence of church membership.  After instruction and examination by the session, these persons shall reaffirm publicly their profession of faith and their acceptance of responsibility in the life of the Church.

Active Member

An active member of a particular church is a person who has made a profession of faith in Christ, has been baptized, has been received into membership of the Church, has voluntarily submitted to the government of this Church, and participates in the Church's work and worship.  An active member is entitled to all the rights and privileges of the Church, including the right to participate in the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper, to present children for baptism, to take part in meetings of the congregation, and to vote and hold office.
