Finding Someone on the Web

There's lots of talk about how you can use the Internet to find lost friends and relatives. But how exactly do you do that?

Searching for individuals on the Internet is far from an exact science. You'll usually find multiple individuals with the same name and then have to do more work deciding which one is the person you're looking for.

There are many sites on the Internet that provide search features and generally they all work the same way. Some will search only for individuals, some for businesses, some list email and World Wide Web information. One of the most popular sites is called "Switchboard" and provides searches for all of the above. You can find Switchboard at www.switchboard.com. If you indicate you wish to find a person you will be able to enter their first name, last name, city and state. Clicking on the "Search" button will bring up a list of individuals who match the criteria you enter. Enter as much or as little information as you know and Switchboard will gives you the results.

For example, if you know you're looking for a person with a first name of "Dan" and a last name of "Hunt" and know he lives somewhere in Nebraska, you'll get a listing of six individuals to choose from.
