Notes from the May 5th Meeting - Visiting GSE Team from Taiwan

The club welcomed the Group Study Exchange from Taiwan.  The group has spent the last 24 days in Nebraska and they have found Nebraskans to be "very kind".  The Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. In a typical four-week tour, applicants participate in five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 club presentations, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days at the district conference, three to four hours per day of cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families.

All members of the team had an opportunity to participate in the program which included: a review of the GSE program; Taiwan statistics; sightseeing in Taiwan; Taiwan festivals/culture and the Taiwan economy.  Peter Wu Te-Kun, the Rotarian in the group, is the owner and the principal of a tutoring school.  The school provides tutoring in subjects such as English, Math and Science for junior high school students after school.  Other members in the group included:  Wayne - an elementary school teacher; Jessica - an international salesperson for her family's business which manufactures fitness equipment; Liber - director of his own faster company which produces products for automakers and related industry buyers; Alice - a paralegal who works for a top law firm.

Rotary Question of the Week

Who is Herbert J. Taylor?

Rotary Fact of the Week (from the RI or District Website)

For Rotary, The Four-Way Test is the cornerstone of all action. It has been for years, and it will be in the future. Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The test is one of the hallmarks of Rotary. Since it was developed in 1932 by Herbert J. Taylor, who later became RI president, it has never ceased to be relevant. Its four brief questions are not based on culture or religion. Instead, they are a simple checklist for ethical behavior. They transcend generations and national borders.  As Rotarians, we should have The Four-Way Test in mind in every decision we make, all day long. Our utmost responsibility is to speak the truth, to be fair, to build goodwill and better friendships, and to do our very best in all situations.
