Notes from the June 17th Meeting - Program Chair - Mary
Jean Rahlfs
Mary Jean's guest for the day was Dr. Dave Johnson, a Blair
veterinarian, who raises and trains puppies for the Leader Dogs for the Blind
organization. Leader Dogs for the Blind relies upon volunteers to raise
German Shepherd, Labrador and Golden Retriever puppies that are later trained as
dog guides for the visually impaired. The dogs are placed in homes when
they are six to eight weeks old, the puppies are raised by their host families
until they are 12 to 15 months old. The young dogs are then returned to
the Leader Dog School to be evaluated for the formal training program. If
accepted into the program the school takes five to nine months.
The cost to train a dog is approximately $28,000. The cost of training and indoctrination of the recipient is provided at no charge (including the flight to Rochester, Michigan, room and board during the training). The operating costs of the program are provided by the Lions Club International, the organization's endowment and donations. Additional information regarding Leader Dogs for the Blind can be found at the following website: www.leaderdog.org or by calling Dr. Johnson at 402-533-2722.

From Amateur Radio to Yachting, from Accountants to Travel Agents, Rotary Fellowships reflect the varied interests and occupations of Rotarians worldwide. Although objectives differ, all fellowships share the same philosophy and foundation. The fellowships are organized by Rotarians for Rotarians to develop new friendships and to advance opportunities for service.
