Notes from the April 25th Meeting - Program Chair - Kirk Hutton

Kirk's guest for the day was Dr. Curt Barr who spoke about disasters - natural and manmade.  Curt talked about local disaster preparedness plans.  Curt is part of the local area response team for disasters.  He feels that the current threats do exist in the area for nuclear, biological and chemical events.  The Omaha area can be considered a target area due to SAC, Offutt Air Force Base,  telecommunications and two nuclear power plants.  Additional concerns exist given the predominance of agriculture in the area.

Curt talked about the governmental response effort that would be deployed in the area if there was an "event."  Curt talked at length about the "push pack" which contains pharmaceutical supplies that could sustain a population of 830,000 for 3 days.  The pack includes I-V's, medications and equipment and could be delivered to the area in 12 hours.  The pack comes from the strategic national stockpile.  Distribution can be made in 12 hours because the push packs are always mobile, either on the road or in the air.

Curt encouraged all members to prepare at home by stocking up water and food.  The best prevention for all of us is to be prepared for a period of three to seven days at home.
