Notes from October 14th Meeting -Program Chair - Kevin Hall
Kevin's guest for the day was Pat Birch, a project manager with Schemmer Associates. During 25 year career she has managed a broad range of architectural projects for both public and private-sector clients. Pat talked about LEED certified construction and her involvement with design of the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center in Gibbon, Nebraska.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. Since its inception in 1998, LEED has grown to encompass more than 14,000 projects in 50 US States and 30 countries covering 1.062 billion square feet (99 km²) of development area. The hallmark of LEED is that it is an open and transparent process where the technical criteria proposed by the LEED committees are publicly reviewed for approval by the more than 10,000 membership organizations that currently constitute the USGBC. Pat indicated that LEED is a holistic approach to building and encompasses sustainability, water efficiency, energy, materials, indoor environmental quality and innovation and design.
Rotary Question
of the Week
Rotary Fact of
the Week
(from the RI or District
Website)
Rotarians have put Service Above Self for more than a century.
Through vocational service, Rotarians serve others through their professions
and promote high ethical standards. In honor of Vocational Service Month,
encourage members to apply the skills and talents they use in their
professions to your club’s service projects. Or, create new projects that
tap into your club’s collective talent. To discover members’ unique skills,
members of the membership or service projects committees could conduct a
skills inventory to determine a service project that maximizes their club’s
professional abilities.
