Checking your Dial-up Networking Settings
  

Your server type settings in Dial-Up Networking need to be configured in a particular way in order for your connection to be optimized.  The following steps can help you check to make certain that your settings are correct.

  • Open "My Computer" from your desktop

  • Open "Dial Up Networking"

  • You should have a connection in here for your local service, right-click that icon Figure 1).

  • Choose Properties (Figure 2).

  • Click the Server Type tab at the top of the next window. If you do not have a Server Types tab, click on the Server Types button near the bottom of the same window (Figure 3).

  • For the advanced options, only "Enable software compression" should be checked.
     

  • For the allowed network protocols, the only one that should be checked should be "TCP/IP". Make changes as needed.

  • Click the "TCP/IP Settings" button.

  • For the top two options, "Server assigned IP address" should be checked. Make changes as needed. 

  • For the next two options, "Server assigned name server addresses" should be checked. Make changes as needed (Figure 4).

  • The bottom two options should both be checked. Make changes as needed.

  • Click OK on the next three screens.

  • Close the Dial-Up Networking window and the My Computer window.
