Managing your Passwords

It is important that the password you select not be easily guessed or discovered by trial and error.

The most secure type of password consists of a random sequence of upper and lower case letters and digits, but because this type of password is hard to remember and usually difficult to type we don't recommend that you take security to these lengths.

Good Ideas for Password

A password consisting of two randomly selected lower case words separated by a punctuation mark is usually secure enough. Numbers are also very useful and appropriate. Your primary consideration when choosing a password should be that it be easy to type, since you may be typing it often. An easy-to-type password can also be typed faster, reducing the chance that someone looking over your shoulder will be able to determine the password by watching your fingers.

When Should Your Password Be Changed

When should you change your password?

  • At least every two months or so

  • Whenever you think your account has been compromised

What is a good password?

  • 6 to 8 characters using a combination of UPPER and lower case letters and digits (0 ... 9)

  • Do not use words you can find in the dictionary

  • Do not use names of people, places, or things

  • Do not use words like "Huskers", "Football", "Golf", etc

The following is a "Top Ten" list for good password management:

10. Your password should not be the same as your name or logon ID.

9. Your password should not be trivial, predictable or obvious.

8. Your password should not be the name of a person, pet, city, street, day of the week, or month of the year.

7. Your password should not be a word that could be found in a dictionary.

6. Your password should be easy for you to remember but difficult for someone else to guess.

5. Your password should be a mixture of alphabetic and numeric characters. Including special characters such as #, $ and @ is a good technique.

4. You should not disclose your password to anyone.

3. A good password might be an acronym such as YAN1WM ("You Are Number 1 With Me") or a combination of partial words or syllables such as TAK2TANG ("Takes 2 to Tango"). Be creative!

2. Passwords should be changed frequently and not reused.

1. PASSWORDS SHOULD NEVER NEED TO BE WRITTEN DOWN.
