Types of Internet Search
Tools
Subject
Directories or Subject Trees - Subject hierarchies of links to
selected Web resources indexed by topic or genre. Usefulness of
index can be restricted by the user having to guess at the correct
subject. The user has the option of entering a subject in an entry
bar. Some subject catalogues only present "the best of the Web" or
"top 5%" sites, so you'll only see the best there. A good starting
point for beginners or surfers.
Search Engines
- Databases of Internet sites searchable by subjects or keywords.
Search engines allow you to search thousands of unorganized Web
sites. To use these effectively, you need to develop a familiarity
with the search methodologies for each one being used.
There are 2 main
types of search engines:
Single-source
search engines - Searches one database of sites. Generally
preferred for more elaborate searches, when you can use the
specific strategies for the individual engine.
Meta-search
engines - To thoroughly cover some topics, you really need to
search a number of engines. A meta search engine searches a number
of search engines and brings the combined results to you, by
eliminating duplicate hits, and ranking hits or results according
to some relevance. Generally preferred when looking for an
overview of a topic. Also known as multi-threaded search engines.
