Transferring Favorites to a New Computer

Transferring Favorites to a New Computer
Getting a new computer can be great fun with all of the new features and capabilities it can provide. Whether you’re going to keep your old computer around as a second machine or use it for a boat anchor, it’s good to know how to transfer the old computer’s data to its replacement.

As far as your Internet access is concerned, files you’ll probably want to save are your Internet browser’s Favorites. Saving and transferring your Favorites is easy to do and will save you valuable time once your new computer is up and running.

Follow these instructions if you’re using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (version 5.0 or above) on a computer using a Windows operating system:
1. Insert a formatted floppy disk into the proper drive on your old computer and then open Internet Explorer.
2. Choose File on the Menu Bar, left-click on Import and Export and then Next.
3. Left click Export Favorites and then choose Next.
4. Highlight the folder(s) that you want save and then choose Next.
5. Choose Export to a File or Address and then click on Browse.
6. Using the drop down menu at the top of the page, choose your floppy disk drive, and then click on Save.
7. Click on Next and then Finish.
8. Take the floppy disk and insert it into your new computer. Open Internet Explorer.
9. Choose File on the Menu Bar, left-click on Import and Export and then Next.
10. Left click Import Favorites and then choose Next.
11. Choose Import From a File or Address and then click on Browse.
12. Using the drop down menu at the top of the page, choose your floppy disk drive, highlight the bookmarks you wish to Import, and then click on Save.
13. Click on Next and choose the folder where you’d like to save the bookmarks.
14. Choose Next, Finish, and then Okay
15. Your bookmarks should now be in your Favorites folder.

4. Select your floppy disk drive from the Save in box and then click on OK.
5. Put your floppy disk (with your saved bookmark file on it) into the floppy drive of the new computer to which you want to transfer the bookmarks.
6. Open Netscape Navigator and then pull down the Communicator menu, click on Bookmarks, and then click on Edit Bookmarks.
7. Drop down the File menu and left-click Import.
8. Select your bookmark file from your floppy disk drive.
