6 large apples 1 cup sugar, divided 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 2 teaspoons lemon juice 3/4 cup flour pinch of salt 6 tablespoons soy margarine 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.Grease a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish with margarine.
Peel, core and slice the apples into a bowl. Add 1/2 cup of sugar, all the spices, the nuts if desired and the lemon juice. Toss lightly to coat and pour into prepared casserole.
Blend remaining sugar with the flour and salt. Cut in the margarine until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle apples with a little extra cinnamon and sugar then top with crumb mixture. Bake for about 45 minutes until crust is nice and brown and apples are tender.
