1 1/2 cups flour (preferably unbleached) 1 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon allspice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cloves (ground) 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup water 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1 tablespoon vinegar (cider or otherwise)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pan only needs greasing if cake will be removed.
In a 8 or 9 inch square baking pan mix the dry ingredients well. Add wet ingredients and mix well with a fork. Pour into pan. Bake 30 minutes or toothpick test.
